Choosing Binoculars for Birding

Most birders prefer 8x magnification. It gives a wider, steadier view that makes it easier to find and follow moving birds than higher-power models. A 42mm objective lens gathers more light for early morning and evening birding, while a 32mm model is lighter and more compact for walks and travel.

Tips for Getting the Sharpest View

• Set the eyecups and interpupillary distance (the width between barrels) to fit your face first.
• Focus with the center knob using your left eye, then fine-tune the right eye with the diopter adjustment.
• Keep your eyes on the bird and raise the binoculars to your eyes, rather than searching through the lenses.
